Cornard Dynamos 8 v 1 Elmden Rovers 1/11/09

The day started very wet and windy and when the game started, Cornard also started a little wet and windy. With Cornard being slow out of the blocks, Elmden took advantage and pressed forward with some determined tackling in the midfield and winning the 50:50 balls.

The first goal came from Elmden with such a move and putting the ball through the midfield and giving their striker a ball to run through Cornards defence to score.

This seemed to wake up Cornard where the rain couldn’t and they started passing the ball around the midfield and pressing for that equaliser. This came from a cross into the box from Joshua Bowles for Nathan to put the ball into the net.

From this point onwards Cornard was pressing continuously and although Elmden defended resolutely, Cornards second came just before half time from Thomas Baker.

2-1 Halftime

The second half started where the first finished with Cornard on the attack and although the pitch was starting to get very muddy this did not stop their passing football with some great running from both Ryan McNicholas and Zak Johnson in midfield which helped  Cornard net a further six goals with the Goalscorers being :-

Ryan McNicholas; Joe Coppin, Josh Palmer, Kai Reynolds and a further two from Thomas Baker giving him his first hat trick of the season.

No Managers MOM , Captains MOM Thomas Baker.

Match report, U12 B League: Tempest v. Brooklands at Wivenhoe Sunday 1st Nov 09. Kick off 1.54pm.

Brooklands beat Tempest 3-0 at home earlier in the season, and the team is on a good run, top of the table, all wins, with only a couple of scares. The whole team has been working hard, with coaches Lee, Dave and Dale turning up every Saturday morning for training to keep them improving. Sid couldn’t make it this week, down with a nasty virus, hope he gets well soon, at least for next weekend. Wind is behind Brooklands in the first half, but gusty. Its been raining all morning, but credit to the groundsmen at Wivenhoe, the pitch is well drained with good covering of grass.

Tempest kick off, and there’s a packed midfield, with no-one having space to do much. A minute in and Tempest put together a couple of good passes, James slips turning on the wet grass and they’re in, good low shot from the edge of the box beats Dan in the corner. 1 – 0 Tempest. Credit to Brooklands, no heads are down, no blame the boys are straight back into it.

Oz is dominating midfield for Tempest, finding space and giving accurate forward passes. He sends their winger away, but James slides in with a perfectly timed tackle. Its that man Jordan again, perfectly judged header to clear from the corner. Hayden passes on to Tom B, but cleared out for a throw. Jordan keeps winning all the headers from throws.

Wivenhoe block the cross with a header behind for a corner to Brooklands on our right. Jonathan takes great corner, dips just level with the far post, and James meets it with a brave, true header from three yards, 1 – 1 on four minutes.

Murray and Dom have to battle down the left, James then Tom K clear. This game is a real battle with not much easy possession by either side. Ethan looks class as he chests the ball down and volleys away. Murray chases the dribbler 20 yards, catches up and gets his body between player and ball to put it out for a throw. Good strength and great attitude… not always his strongest point.

Hayden’s clever backheeled pass is cut out, but Tom K is there again to clear up. Murray controls a high bouncing ball forward with his shoulder, but the Ref gives handball as many Tempest shouts heard. Brooklands are getting forward, and Tom B controls perfectly with his back to goal, giving him time to lay it back to Dom who shoots from distance with height and curl, over the keeper, 2 – 1 Brooklands on eight minutes.

Hayden is first to through ball, hits it on the half-volley high but runs across the face of goal and out for a goal kick. Brooklands just have the edge, maybe a slight lead in confidence, looking clearer what to do when they have the ball. Murray tries his luck from distance with a high half-volley, but keeper catches cleanly. Murray gets his foot first to a high ball, but the later challenge catches him, no malice. James has to run hard against their fast right winger, just gets enough of a foot in at the second attempt – a vital challenge. Dan collects a weak, low shot from the edge of the box. Ethan and Jordan have a great routine down the right: long throw from Ethan, flicked on by Jordan with his head, they keep making progress.

Jordan puts his body on the line again with a firm, well-timed tackle on the ground, another Tempest move stopped. Murray gets ahead of his man, but for some reason free kick given against him. Good Tempest defending gets the through ball hooked out for a throw, with Hayden on his shoulder. Tempest pressure down our left flank eventually comes to nothing with a loose ball gathered by Dan. Jonathan is tripped from behind while on one of his bursting runs down the right, dives theatrically but the free kick goes Tempest’s way. Murray’s strength wins the ball, but the pass is cut out. Tempest make a substitution on 26 minutes.

Tom K wins the ball on the halfway line, sets Murray away who is tripped and takes the free-kick, five yards from the box on the left. Its high and hard, dipping and looking goal-bound when someone just touches it with their head enough to deflect it onto the foot of the post. We can’t get a clear shot from the rebound. Tempest feeling the pressure, push just outside the box on the right. Jonathan hits this one mid-power, dipping into the goal area and Tom B is sharpest with his toe from close in, 3 – 1. Dan collects the through ball – he’s getting good at coming for them - and clears with a massive drop kick down the right. The wind is increasing, and the question is will three-one be enough against the wind in the second half? Jordan has a chance collecting the ball on the edge of the box with space ahead, but his shot is wide. Jonathan hurdles another late slide tackle. Murray tackles back again, Callum wins a tussle and clears reliably – he doesn’t miss! Half time.

Callum has hurt his foot in a tackle earlier, but is playing through the pain. Jonathan gets a rest and Harry comes on left midfield, Murray goes right. He and James are holding the Tempest forwards down the right, Tom K covers and clears. Once again, all the defenders are reading the game well and covering for each other. Tempest now progressing down the right with several throw-ins. Four minutes in. Ethan and Tom K clear the danger again, Murray gets involved, blocking, and tackling their winger on the run. Tom K calls loudly and wins the header, Jordan, Harry and Hayden are all tackling and battling well.

Murray stops Oz, who gets back at him – some hard, quick tackles going in, Hayden turns inside on the run, but runs into another defender. Murray comes central, Dom goes right. Dom wins the header, is pushed, free kick. Hayden is pushed but stays on his feet and wins the ball, passes to Harry who is clear, squares to Tom B in a better position, but adjudged just offside – a tight one. Eleven minutes in and Brooklands still looking likelier to score again. Dom chases the winger back, wins the ball putting it safely out for a throw. Callum clears with a diving header, but his head is caught by the forwards knee as he tries to jump over, no malice and Callum is strong and gets up after brief treatment from Lee. Murray puts Dom through, beats one but is just caught.

Oz wins the loose ball for Tempest, and typically confident and quick he sets up an attack down our left. Tom K tackles and wins it, but a frustrated Tempest forward grabs him round the chest and judo throws his to the ground, free-kick. Tempest coaches are shouting to their players to hurry up with throw-ins as their losing 3-1, not ahead.

Corner to Brooklands on 19 minutes – Murray takes from the right, Tom B controls and lays off to Dom, but his shot isn’t quite powerful enough, and the keeper catches. Tempest attacks are getting further now, and Dan comes to the edge of the six yard box to help his defender, but can only tap it out for a corner to Tempest. Pressure is now on Brooklands to defend the corner with the wind against them. Great clearing header, but Tempest now have corner from our right. Callum clears, Tom K tackles bravely, pressure off.

Some nice footwork from Murray, but its too packed in the middle to get anywhere. Jordan is still competing hard and fast, Callum slides in with perfect timing to rob the forward who was through, but offside given anyway. Jonathan and Cameron come on the Hayden and Harry. A foul on James as he tackles back is not given, James gets his legs tangled with the forward and Tempest have a free-kick just outside the box – if they can get this they can really go for it in the closing minutes. Jordan again is somehow in the way, the rebound is from his back, and their follow-up shot is wide.

Dan has to come out again and just gathers on the ground ahead of two defenders and their forward, brave keeping! Twenty-seven minutes gone, can Brooklands hold on?

Murray is put through on the right with a shooting chance, but gets the ball stuck under his feet and the chance is gone. Jonathan knocks it high across the box to Cameron, but he’s tackled before he can get control. Jordan and Tom K getting their blocks in as Tempest now desperate pressure. Oz works it well to the right wing, great low shot straight at Dan. Callum slides in to block one Tempest forward, James slides to stop another, but Tempest are getting closer. Tempest work it across to the right where the forward hits a snap shot low towards the corner, somehow Dan has dived down and held, brilliant save! Tempest have time for just one more corner, its cleared and Brooklands have held on. 3 – 1 on full time.

Once again a real hard, physical, quick-closing battling performance by the table-toppers. Tempest have some class players and fought hard, they should do very well in the league. Every Brooklands player played a vital part in this match, if any one of them had had an off day, the result might have been different. Tempest’s pressure meant our attackers and midfield has less space and opportunities than they sometimes have, and our defenders were tested again and again. Jordan was again superb if putting his body on the line time and again to break up attacks before they became dangerous, Dan was alert and pulled off a great save, but if I have to single out one defender this week from four lad’s excellent performances for man of the match it would be Tom Kiernan. He calls for the ball, wins headers, is reliable on clearing loose balls, never stops battling and supporting and covering and intelligently does the sensible thing, often opting for safety by putting it out for a throw, but sometimes getting it up the line to feet and once looking a total pro protecting the ball to let it run out for a Brooklands throw, taking the pressure off. The defence was repeatedly tested, and passed, well done guys.

Thanks to the ref and the excellent lineos. I don’t think the ref got anything important wrong, and anyway he had a better view than me, and he had a generally good game. If I have a word of advice for any ref though, it might be to make your own decision quickly, and if you’re pretty sure, stick with it. Once players (and more likely led by coaches and parents) get the idea that if they shout loudly enough they might get the decision, they will keep doing it. Good hard game in a generally good spirit. Jordan’s ankle is hopefully just bruising from some studs, and Callum seems Ok, good wishes to Sid for a recovery. Another tough game, job done. Thanks to all the players and coaches and the ref for great entertainment this afternoon!

Colchester and District Youth Football League.
D League  U14's  1st November 2009
Clare Town Lions FC 17 Bergholt Heath 1

it was good to see Bergholt turn up with 10 players as before today they had
played with 8, and to everyone's surprise Bergholt went 1 goal up in very
wet and windy conditions. Clare were finding it difficult to play their
passing football with the ball skimming around but eventually Alex Feeney
got their first goal. Clare started to settle down now and got used to the
poor weather conditions and before half time Aaron got his 4th goal in 2
games, followed by James Rawlinson's 2 goals and 1 from Charlie Holmes to go
in 5 - 1 up. In the second half the weather settled and so did Clare and the
goals came flooding rather than the rain, with another 13 goals from Alex
Feeney, Luke wheeler, Tom Grafen, Alfie Frost with a hatrick, James with
another 2, and another 4 from Charlie, taking his tally for the season to 24
in 6 games. a special mention to Bradley Clark who had little to do in
Clare's goal while freezing in wet conditions. this takes Clare to top of
the league on goal difference to AFC Sudbury.
