Leigh Rockets 3 Little Oakley blues 1 - after extra time

Little Oakley's long unbeaten run finally came to an end at the hands of Southends Premier Youth club Leigh Rockets. Playing into

a fierce wind Oakley's defence of Kioussis, Mack , Palmer and knight knew they had to keep a tight line to snuff out the threat

of a the prolific Rockets, aided by Cairns in Goal and a busy midfield of Johnson, Duly, Selwyn, Abbott, Davies and heath they succeeded

until 3 minute before the break when a loose ball fell to the rockets forward who left Cairns with no chance. The second half started with Oakley in determined mood, finding the breakthrough was proving difficult though and strikers Roberts , Taylor and Weston worked hard for little reward against the towering Rockets centre halves. With 5 minutes remaining Jacob Kioussis struck a superb corner than curled straight into the Rockets net and extra time ensued. Again though luck was against Oakley with Rockets winning the Toss and opting for the wind at their backs against a tiring Oakley side. This proved to be the undoing with a goal coming quickly from kick off , with two minutes to go and Oakley pushing for a deserved equaliser Rockets again scored on a break to leave the Oakley lads disappointed but not down hearted having lost to one of the regions premier youth clubs.

Lexden Saints Blues 2 Copeland Colts 0

Copeland Colts travelled up from Southend where they are vying for top spot in their premier league so this was all set up for a decent match.

The conditions were generally good although the pitch was a bit cloying.  The wind was at the backs of Copeland for the first half and they tried to use that to their advantage for the first part of the match.  Both teams started positively with Lexden’s passing game coming out early as they tried to work the ball around.

Copeland were well organised playing a 4-4-2 and were competent in all areas.  They were quite sharp and robust up front, the midfield worked and passed and the defence had a solid look to it.  This was probably the stiffest overall test the Saints have come up against so far this season and it was pretty even for the first fifteen minutes or so.

Both teams were quick to the ball and tackle and Lexden had the first shot on goal when Jake Hughes tried his luck from about twenty five yards out but it sailed over the bar.  The second shot came in quickly and after eight minutes Copeland tested Ben Gallifant from outside the box but the Saints keeper held on in a good position.  Lexden then attacked but Copeland’s back line was clearing the crosses when they came in.  That said Hughes should have scored when he rose unmarked on the edge of the six yard box to meet a Luc Williams corner from the right, but he couldn’t direct his header fully and it went over the bar.

Gallifant then made a super save when he had to adjust his feet and tip a ball over the bar as Copeland shot strongly from outside the box after twelve minutes.

Copeland looked to break and Lexden were at times getting a bit caught up in the conditions and clearances were coming back.  The Saints continued to pass the ball around and Harrison and Garner up front combined dangerously but couldn’t find a way past the defence.

In the twenty fifth minute a free-kick was awarded outside the box for a tackle by Lewis Bailey on the Copeland striker and the free-kick was well despatched goal-ward but Gallifant again was in the right position to hold safely.  Lexden continued to press and were getting the better of the game in the last fifteen minutes or so.  Lewis Axcell tested the keeper with a high cross and although he dropped it he managed to snaffle it under pressure and was awarded a free-kick for his efforts.

After twenty seven minutes the ball was worked from the centre to Williams on the left and he took the full back on.  Cutting in onto his right, he shot but the ball whistled over; still nil-nil.  Hughes was winning all headers in the middle of the pitch and Aaron Boots and Ed Field were passing subtly and simply when needed.  Indeed a phase of play ended with Lexden having a good three minutes when they peppered the Copeland area with crosses but the ball was not forced into the net.  On one occasion Josh Harrison got in behind the defence on the right and his deep cross was half met by Williams at the far post but he couldn’t turn it in and Boots shot past the post.

On twenty nine minutes the Copeland keeper made a fantastic close range save to deny Deasko Garner the opener from ten yards out when he took down a through ball and cracked his shot off.

With the half drawing to a close Lexden took the lead with a well crafted goal when Garner again went past two defenders and chipped to the far post where Ed Field had ghosted in on the blind side to put it into the back of the net from within the six yard box; 1-0 and the half was over.

The second half started with Lexden taking the game by the scruff of the neck when an attack down the right ended with Lewis Axcell shooting past the keeper but it was cleared off the line by the covering defender for a corner.  Copeland responded with an attack of their own after the Lexden defence was caught playing the ball square across the line.  The forward took it on but hit a weak shot that Gallifant saved readily.

The wind had grown a little stronger and the ball was running away now when the Saints played their through balls.  Knocking up to feet and setting the game up from the front line to midfield was the main way forward and the first change was made after forty five minutes when Ben Phillips came on at the back to slot in on the left.

The second half was pretty well dominated by Lexden but at one-nil it was still anybodies game.  They continued to press and were having much the better possession with Copeland finding it difficult to clear their lines effectively.  The ball was returned more often than not and although they were coping well with this pressure they were not looking likely to create themselves and the game was put out of their reach when Lexden took the chance and made it 2-0.  A super ball from the left wing by Williams, inside his own half, put Garner away down the middle and he drew the keeper and slotted it under into the corner.

Lexden made three changes with Callum McClean, Ryan Chambers and Leo Reid all entering the fray and Lexden continued to hold sway with shots and territorial dominance but were unable to add to their score.

On balance it was the right result but Copeland were a worthy opponent and Lexden progress and can look forward to meeting tough opponents as the competition progresses.  Playing against the best teams will allow the team and the players individually to benchmark themselves against good players in well organised and effective teams.  This is always an interesting aspect as it shows much about character from the response but Lexden look like they can go all the way with the strength of the squad they have this year.

Under 14's B Division

Frinton & Walton 3 Little Oakley Reds 2

Oakley were under pressure right from the kick off, with Frinton coming at them in waves down Oakley’s right hand side but man of the match Tom kite’s superb talking and  with Shane Routledge in support Frinton couldn’t brake though. An excellent save from Jordan Bull who tipped a long range shot over the bar kept Oakley in the game till the 15 minute, when Jamie partridge put a ball through to Charlie Eldridge, who outpace the defence to score with his first touch after coming off the bench. Oakley held onto the lead till the last 5 minutes of the half when they seemed to loose concentration at the back and conceded three times to make the score 3 -1 at halftime. The second half went much the same way with Oakley always on the back foot. With just minutes to go Oakley did score again, with Eldridge getting his second. But this was all too late and Oakley went down to only their third defeat of the season.

Little Oakley 6 Valley Green (Witham) 1

Credit must be given to the management & Players from Valley Green who made the long trip over from Witham with just ten players. Oakley love playing at home with the two wide boys James Roots & Jamie Eades using the flanks to there advantage. Jack Burkett gave Oakley the lead early on rounding the keeper to finish well. Oakley Captain Joss Neale was awesome throughout never putting a foot wrong all game and finishing the game with a great hattrick scoring Oakley's 2nd, 4th & 6th goal for his second goal he lobbed the keeper from just inside there own half, Centre back Ben Hammond added the 4th heading in a James Roots corner and Jack Burkett completed a brace late on.

all round a good performance of which after last weeks efforts came as a very welcome surprise.

Colchester Athletic 3 Tiptree 0

With two important games to come over the coming weeks Col Athletic couldn’t afford a slip up, it took 10 minutes before Athletic took control of the midfield and started to pass the ball around and created some good chances only bad finishing and some good goal keeping from Tiptree’s keeper Ben Elmer kept the score 0-0, Athletic continued to pile on the presser but couldn’t find that finishing touch, Danny Thomas the Athletic defended even cleared off the  Tiptree line when a looping ball caught by the wind beat the keeper, with the half time score 0-0 Tiptree was still in the game. The second half continued as before one way traffic good defending and bad finishing continued until a great trough ball found Kas Gbaja out pacing the defender to slot the ball in the corner of the net, after the goal Tiptree had a good spell of precession but couldn’t get a shot at goal, Athletic again took control and started to play confident football some good work down the left wing from Will Kennedy passed the ball to Arron Chatton who made a great cross to find Gus Galloway unmarked to header the ball home to make it 2-0, now Athletic were playing some good football Will Kennedy scored the third to finish the match 3-0 a good performance and played in good sprit from both teams and parents
