Under 14’s Colchester Open Cup

Lexden Saints 2 Brooklands 0

The hard frost overnight made for tricky conditions as the sun had started the job of thawing so it was in-between hard and soft. This meant that players from both sides were finding it difficult at times to get a grip, but this had no real bearing on the game.

Brooklands had the first half chance when the forward skewed his shot across the Lexden goal mouth but it went out for a goal-kick after three minutes. Lexden hit back and a shot looped over the bar from Lewis Axcell after good work down the left.

There was not much between the teams as Brooklands were defending stoutly and looking to attack in numbers, but the Saints defence was covering with Lewis Bailey, Elliot Lamb and Ben Phillips anticipating when needed.

Lexden were unable to get the ball down and the forwards were not having much luck with the bounce of the ball, but the passing game was proving difficult to get going and this was reflected in the lack of chances at either end.

On the twelve minute Brooklands shot over from outside the box and Lexden countered at the other end with a free-kick from wide by Ryan Chambers that eluded the keeper but was headed off the line by the covering defender.

Aaron Boots made tackles when called upon but the first half drew to a close with not much further incident and the score still 0-0.

Within six minutes of the start though Lexden were one up when a free kick was clipped in from the left and a Brooklands defender stretched to head away, but only managed to loop it up and over the keepers head into the top left hand corner for an unfortunate OG; 1-0.

This galvanised the Saints and within three minutes they were 2-0 up when a good through ball from midfield was touched in his stride by Garner and with the keeper advancing he headed goal-wards. The keeper got a hand to it but it still had enough momentum to bounce over the line.

Brooklands continued to work hard looking for a breakthrough but Lexden were doing enough to keep themselves at arms length. Ben Gallifant in goal was controlling his area well and clearing his lines with deep balls which helped turn defence into attack, but the general zip was missing, although not of any consequence as the game drew to a close and Lexden were through to the semi-final.
