Clacton United 1 Little Oakley 3
On
a cold, windy Sunday morning on the Clacton sea front. Little Oakley were
the first to waken with some great passing moves.
Adam
Brown and Matthew Smith were solid at the back giving Oakley the
advantage , Tyler Sullivan was the first to score with a long range
shot.
With
Brandon Manning doing all the chasing this made it difficult for the
Clacton defence to clear there lines. Pressure was also added from Franky
Selwyn and Jack Murray. Another goal was added for Oakley with a close range
shot from Brandon and this was followed by another well taken Penalty from
Franky.
The first half ended 3 - 0.
The
second half started as the first half finished with Oakley passing the ball
around well. Nathan Southgate was asked to do a job in the second half and
it was executed with pace and energy.
With
some injuries in the second half the Oakley team had to make enforced
changes and players were playing in unusual positions.
Clacton
were now on the front foot and passing the ball around very well. For 5 minutes Clacton
put pressure on the Oakley defence and Clacton came close to adding to
their score line. Thanks to the solid hand of Callum Mallett the goals were
kept at bay.
With
Oakley back in an attacking mood, the Clacton goal keeper made numerous
saves to keep the score line the same.
With
Oakley pressing forward to finish the game off, they were caught on the break
from a well engineered passing move that ended with a well deserved goal.
Jack
Murray came close to adding another goal from a long range shot, that dipped
with pace, over the keepers head only to hit the cross bar.
Nathan
Southgate came close to adding more goals but was unable to continue
after a tackle resulting in injury.

Goals
from Dan Taylor and Jack Abbott ensured Oakley's passage into the semi finals
of the league cup but not before
man
of the match Will Cairns had pulled off a string of fine stops to deny a
determined Frinton side. Oakley opted to play with
the
obligatory strong wind at their backs and Taylor and Weston soon combined to
cause the Frinton defence to hack the ball anywhere in order to keep them out.
Mack and Knight at the back assisted by Davies and Kioussis coped with most
things well, but two quick breaks from Frinton sprung Cairns into action.
Taylor then shrugged off the challenge of the Frinton left back before
unleashing an unstoppable shot into the net. Playing against the wind in the
second half Oakley knew they would have to keep the ball low and Selwyn Duly
Heath and Abbott did this well, Johnson and Davies switched roles and this soon
nearly paid off with Davies finding Roberts whose shot bounced just over the
bar. Heath then found Abbott who danced round the defence and slotted the
second for Oakley. There was still time for Frinton to mount a comeback but
this never materialised as Oakley passed the ball around well and now look
forward their second semi final.
Little Oakley Reds 1 Colchester Athletic Blues 5
Oakley entertained A League side Col Athletic in the last Eight of the league
cup this week, as a quite often happens the lower leagues luck finally runs
out, having previously beat A league opposition. Athletic scored in the
first half with a complete fluke, as a cross from the byline
looked as if was going high over past the goal, caught the wind and went in off
the post. Halftime 0-1 . Oakley at that point were in with a chance as the
first half was pretty even, but the hard work was soon undone as they conceded
twice in the first two minutes. Oakley pulled it back to 1-3 with a good taken
Oli Freke goal, but as Oakley tried to go forward they got caught at the back.
The score line doesn’t give Oakley much credit, but they tried their hardest.
Well done boys for getting this far.Man of the match
Lewis Collins.

HALSTEAD’S NINE MEN ALMOST SNATCH IT
Colchester Athletic 1Halstead Town 0
Halstead
Town had a hard game on paper away to second in the league, Colchester Athletic
but when the team turned up to find that they were going into the most
important game of the season with only 9 players. The third placed Halstead
played like they had an extra player on instead of 2 players less. The injury
stricken side didn’t think that the disadvantage would mean they were going to
lose and within the opening 10 seconds could have gone one nil up through Dan
Sakal who chased down the left back, tackled him and his shot just went wide of
the post.
Halstead
in the opening 20 minutes looked the side with the 2-player advantage and went
close to scoring on numerous occasions. Battling displays from the hardworking
midfield of David Ball, Daniel Sakal, Bonnet and Michael Huwes meant the
attackers didn’t have a sniff at goal. The Halstead defence of Lewis Cunliffe,
Twiggy and Greg Charlton stood solid throughout the game and all three played
probably the best they have all season. Twiggy was solid and made some superb
tackles and Lewis Cunliffe was as strong as ever.
Bradley
was forced to make a stunning save as Colchester Athletic pushed for a goal
shot low down to him he forced the shot past the post. A great performance from
the Town keeper
Halstead
went into Half time with the score 0-0, the team continued to press in the
second half, and tired legs began to show and Athletic were quick to take their
chance. A shot from the edge of the box well taken and driven into the corner
beat Bradley in goal. The Halstead team never gave up hope of a comeback and
Michael Huwes probably should have scored from a great cross that he met
unmarked but headed straight at the keeper.
Lone
striker James Murray was left with the task of working hard against 4 strong
defenders all game and that he did, his work rate and effort was brilliant.
Halstead pushed on late on and Greg Charlton could have got a point after
weaving in and out of the Athletic defence and firing a shot that was parried
for a corner. Halstead went for it in the last moments and a corner gained
meant Lewis Cunliffe pushed on, his ariel ability
this season has seen him score numerous goals from corners but he could not
guide his headers towards goal on this occasion.
The
Halstead team received applause as they left the field and rightly so after
almost beating second place Colchester Athletic. Halstead will now look to make
up ground on second spot and possibly look at promotion to the First division.
The spectators i.e. dads all said the boys performed brilliantly and were so
unlucky to not go home with a point if not more.
