With
the amount of rain that fell on Saturday the pitch was surprisingly in good
condition as the Saints switched to Layer for this home game.
Lawford
were looking to avenge the season opener and started brightly but were against it
with a strong wind in their faces.
Lexden put their defence under pressure early and worked the ball to the
wings well which made them turn, but when the ball came across the Lawford
keeper made two saves when one–on-one that kept them in the game.
Lexden
continued to press and it was 1-0 after ten minutes when Josh Harrison latched
onto a through ball and whipped one under the keeper after ten minutes. Prior to that, Lawford had a nice move down
the left with a good clipped cross finding its way to the striker but he leant
back and shot over the bar.
In
the fourteenth minute it was 2-0 with an unfortunate own goal, Reid went down the left, cut the ball inside
to Harrison and his cross-shot was cleared by a defender but only to the heels
of another sky blue and with the keeper wrong-footed it ran over the line.
There
were a few further attempts but the game was a little flat when Lawford then
struck on thirty one minutes. Lexden
failed to deal with a ball in the box and the clearance fell to the grateful
Lawford player who tucked it past the defender and keeper from eight yards to
make it 2-1 and the game was more open once more.
The
first half drew to a close and Lexden made several changes. Within a minute of the re-start they
reinstated the two goal advantage and were 3-1 up. Luc Williams went down the left, drew the
keeper and finished well into the corner.
The
Lexden defence of Ben Phillips, Elliot Lamb and Lewis Bailey were coping with
the Lawford attack, and although things were a little more even in midfield
their defence was looking more vulnerable as the attacks started to mount.
It
then became four in the forty fifth minute when Deasko Garner pounced on a
bouncing ball in the box and beat the keeper to his left; 4-1.
Lexden
continued to press and were looking dangerous with every attack as the game
went on. Indeed from a corner on the
right, Williams clipped a ball in and Lewis Bailey up from the back rose (with
the aid of a fire-ladder) to meet the ball and his header flew into the top
corner of the far post to make it 5-1.
Williams
then scored his second and Lexden’s sixth when he ran through onto a ball from
Ed Field over the full-back on the right and shot just inside the box. The keeper managed to get a hand on it and
the ball cannoned back off the post to Harrison. His shot rebounded from the covering defender
to a grateful Williams who tucked it away neatly with a curling left foot shot
into the far corner at waist level; 6-1.
Lewis
Axcell then added his name to the score sheet when he came in from the left and
scored past the advancing keeper to make it 7-1 after fifty nine minutes. Lexden were looking strong coming forward and
were stretching the defence at every opportunity. A few long range efforts from Jake Hughes
either struck his own player or whistled past the post, but Lawford continued
to harry and had a couple of attacks that may have
brought them more reward but for the covering Saints defence.
The
game was wrapped up in the seventieth minute when Leo Reid ghosted in at the
far post to score with a diving header from a corner on the left that evaded
all others; 8-1.
