Match Reports

Under 13's A Division

Little Oakley 6 New Latchingdon 1
In a generally disappointing season with Oakley sitting second to bottom in the A division with just one victory, the U13’s put in a good performance in their bottom of the table clash with New Latchingdon. Deadlock was broken when Jordon Heath slotted past the advancing keeper. The visitors headed in at the far post from a deep free kick before James Crosby added a second for Oakley. Rory Harman scored an excellent third before the break after some great build up work. Second half saw Oakley coast to victory even though the game was still very even as regards possession. Crosby and Heath added a second each with Harry Cranfield finishing the scoring. The difference on the day was Oakley’s superior finishing which has let them down through most of this season. A good performance by all 14 players. Let’s hope this can be carrier in to next weeks LC 3rd Round tie at home to Heybridge.

Under 14’s Colchester Open Cup

Stanway Villa 0 Lexden Saints 2

Having played each other three times this season, meeting again for the fourth occasion made this feel like a Scottish League affair.

It stands to reason that the more you play a team the more difficult it becomes as you learn more about each other each time.  Stanway were well organised and more robust in defence on this occasion and they worked hard in midfield to squeeze the space.

They almost took the lead in the second minute when a corner was met by the striker but a good save by Ben Gallifant down to his right punched it out.  The danger was still there though and the returned cross was cannoned against the bar at the far post by the Villa player; a timely introduction and a reminder to Lexden that it’s all about how you perform on the day.

The game continued with Stanway making use of the wind at their backs and they cleared their lines well to switch into attack.  Lexden were covering those though with Lewis Bailey, Ben Phillips and Lewis Axcell marshalling the back line.

A good passing move and persistence by Axcell on the right after nineteen minutes ended with a pull-back to Alex Rutter but his shot was saved by the keeper at the feet of Ed Field as he followed up.

Axcell then clipped in a cross from the right to the far post which was met by Leo Reid on the stretch, but the header dropped wide of the post.  Trying to move the ball wide was proving difficult for the Saints and Stanway continued to press and were looking to get anything on a quick break.

The first half drew to a close at 0-0 and Stanway were much the happier of the two having contained Lexden.  With wholesale changes for the second half, Lexden looked to make the advantage of the wind at their backs tell and had far the greater possession in this period.  Stanway continued to defend well but were finding it increasingly difficult to clear their lines and ease the pressure.

The Saints continued to press forward and looked dangerous when getting in behind and clipping crosses from the by-line.  Indeed it was 1-0 after Field drove into the box and shot which was blocked by the keeper and bounced wide, but Luc Williams clipped it back in to the far post for Axcell to head in from a yard out.  Williams then left the field as he was unable to run off a knock, so his contribution was five minutes and one assist which is not bad.

Lexden continued to turn the vice with Cameron McLean and Deasko Garner combining well down the left but the resultant cross eluded a yellow shirt and bounced to safety at the far post.

In the fifty third minute the ball was moved again from the left to Jake Hughes in the middle and he let fly from twenty three yards out but the keeper saved well down to his left and held onto the ball.

The second came down the left also.  Lewis Bailey took a throw down the line to Josh Harrison and he turned the ball into the centre for Field to burst past the central defender with a chest pass to himself and he finished strongly into the top of the net from twelve yards out to make it 2-0.

This effectively ended the contest with only a few minutes to go but Stanway can take heart from a consistent performance throughout the game.

Lexden move into the next round but will have a very stern test next week when welcoming Dagenham & Redbridge for a tasty County Cup tie.  They will need to be at their best to progress

Brooklands Boys 3 Little Oakley Reds 0
Oakley started really well, and were on top for the first twenty minutes, creating two clear changes but both being hit straight at the keeper. Brooklands slowly got their game going but was still 0-0 at halftime.
The second half saw Brooklands play some quick passing football and Oakley defending well keeping them at bay, until the last fifthteen minutes when Brooklands scored three times to win the tie.
Players of the match Shane Routledge & Sam Warren.

Wivenhoe Youth 0  Little Oakley Blues 0 AET - Oakley win on Pens 3 - 1

Penalties coolly converted by Heath, Duly and Selwyn after some tremendous stops by Will Cairns in the Oakley goal ensured that Oakley progressed through to the 1/4 finals of the Open cup.

The match was played in blustery conditions and for the second match running Oakley found themselves facing a strong wind. Solid defending from Kioussis, Mack, Knight and Palmer kept the quick Wivenhoe forwards at bay. Oakley's midfield were finding it difficult to keep the ball down and service to the front runners of Roberts and Taylor was limited. The second half started with Wivenhoe this time facing the wind and proving that they too were worthy of their position at the top of the

B League with strong defending and quick counter attacking. Selwyn , Johnson and Taylor combined to create Oakley's first clear chance of the game but it came to nothing. With extra time looming Oakley's superior fitness started to show and First Taylor and then Johnson has efforts cleared off the line after good corners from Duly and Kioussis. Davies & Abbott both came off injured and this depleted the Oakley midfield and extra time followed. Taylor again had an effort cleared off the line and then the came drama of penalties, Oakley and in particular Cairns showed strong character at this stage to see the blues through.
