Under 14’s (Andrews League)

Brooklands 2 Lexden Saints Blues 6

The day was cold, overcast but bright (work that out and bells and whistles for those scientifically inclined) and the pitch looked in good condition if a little zippy on the top surface. Brooklands playing at home were off quickly and attacked where possible.

Lexden had the first few efforts in the opening ten minutes and the Brooklands keeper made a couple of early saves when called upon. After four minutes passing between Luc Williams, Ed Field and Jake Hughes ended with the latter shooting low to the keepers left from outside the box. He scrambled across and palmed it away for a corner. Williams found Alex Rutter but his shot was high from twelve yards.

It was 1-0 after seven minutes when Brooklands took advantage of some lax marking. Getting on the end of a cross the forward banged it into the top corner giving Ben Gallifant the Lexden keeper no chance.

Within ten minutes Williams shot inside the box and the keeper saved and held on at the toes of the rushing yellow. Knocking it around well, Lexden were finding each other in space and Jake Hughes equalised from twenty five yards out when his powerful shot beat the keeper down low the keepers left; this after good work down the left with Williams and Field combining well to tee him up; 1-1

Brooklands continued to work and their keeper again saved well when Rutter ran through and shot, but the ball bounced back to Josh Harrison who on backing up well finished past a couple of defenders on the line; 1-2.

They continued to press but Lexden’s passing was proving the main difference between the teams and Field again put Harrison through but his shot was again well saved by the keeper. Looking dangerous with great passing to feet Lexden continued to press but were being thwarted by the Brooklands defence.

The Saints defence of Lewis Bailey, Elliot Lamb and Lewis Axcell were coping well with the forays they encountered but still had to be to the mark to keep the blue and white stripes at bay, The half-time whistle came with the score still close.

A few changes made by the Saints meant that the momentum was still high and again the Brooklands keeper thwarted Harrison when well placed. However, he was beaten by a well constructed free kick on the left. Hughes whipped in a deep curling cross to the far past and Leo Reid rose nicely to head into the top corner; 1-3.

Lewis Axcell pushing forward made a few telling runs down the right and it was a good corner from Callum McClean that caused chaos in the box when his curling effort was just headed wide.

Lamb was sweeping well at the back and was well assisted by Bailey and also Ben Phillips. After fifty minutes a hooked ball forward by Hughes almost made it into the net but the keeper clawed it away for a corner. He again saved well but was unable to keep it out any longer when Ryan Chambers curled a corner over the line. Under pressure from Reid he was unable to push it away and the goal stood; 1-4.

Lewis Bailey then hooked one in after sixty two minutes when a corner was headed back into the mix and he swivelled and shot high inside the six yard box; 1-5. However Brooklands were not done with and a spectacular effort from the centre forward flew into the top corner from all of thirty yards, again giving Gallifant no chance; 2-5.

Not to be outdone by his defensive partner, Lamb pushed forward and latched onto a half clearance. Drawing two defenders he rounded and finished past the on-rushing keeper to make it 2-6.

The game finished soon after and Lexden took the points in an entertaining display by both sides.
